National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution
Overview

The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) is a nonprofit, lineage-based organization dedicated to preserving the history of the American Revolution, promoting education, and fostering patriotism. The society was founded on October 11, 1890, and chartered by Congress on December 2, 1896.

Founding and Structure

Founders of the NSDAR include Mary Smith Lockwood, Eugenia Washington (great-grandniece of George Washington), Ellen Hardin Walworth, and Mary Desha. The organization was established at Strathmore Arms in Washington, D.C. Initially, the Sons of the American Revolution refused to admit women, leading to the formation of the Daughters.

Membership

Membership is limited to women who are direct lineal descendants of individuals involved in the American Revolution or its subsequent war. Applicants must reach the age of 18 and demonstrate their descent through genealogical documentation.

Objectives and Activities

The NSDAR focuses on three main objectives:

  • Historical Preservation: The society aims to protect and promote the study of American history, especially concerning the Revolution.
  • Education: It supports several educational institutions and awards scholarships to advance knowledge and education.
  • Patriotism: The organization encourages patriotism through various programs and community services, including veteran support and Constitution Week celebrations.
Community Work

Members participate in numerous civic activities, including:

  • Veteran Support: Providing extensive volunteer services to veterans.
  • Constitution Week: Promoting constitutional awareness during its annual celebration.
  • Historic Preservation: Maintaining historical sites and markers.
Publications and Headquarters

The NSDAR publishes American Spirit Magazine and maintains a significant genealogical library at its headquarters, Memorial Continental Hall in Washington, D.C. The library aids family research and preserves historical artifacts.

Chapters and Membership

The society has over 190,000 members across more than 2,975 chapters in the United States and internationally. Local chapters often engage in community service projects tailored to regional needs.

Notable Contributions

Over the years, the NSDAR has made significant contributions to American society, including supporting schools for underprivileged youth and organizing historical preservation efforts nationwide. The organization continues to emphasize education, patriotism, and community service in its mission.
