The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) is a nonprofit, lineage-based organization dedicated to preserving the history of the American Revolution, promoting education, and fostering patriotism. The society was founded on October 11, 1890, and chartered by Congress on December 2, 1896.

Founding and Structure

Founders of the NSDAR include Mary Smith Lockwood, Eugenia Washington (great-grandniece of George Washington), Ellen Hardin Walworth, and Mary Desha. The organization was established at Strathmore Arms in Washington, D.C. Initially, the Sons of the American Revolution refused to admit women, leading to the formation of the Daughters.

Membership

Membership is limited to women who are direct lineal descendants of individuals involved in the American Revolution or its subsequent war. Applicants must reach the age of 18 and demonstrate their descent through genealogical documentation.

Objectives and Activities

The NSDAR focuses on three main objectives:
