She was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at the age of 3 and celiac disease at the age of 5, so she has been balancing CF and a gluten-free diet ever since. Her involvement on the varsity cross-country team throughout her high school years further fueled her passion for nutrition. In her free time, she enjoys rock climbing, hiking, reading, and spending time with friends and family. She looks forward to starting her dietetic internship rotations this summer and hopes to work as a Registered Dietitian in the area of pediatric nutrition or sports nutrition in the near future. In honor of #CFAwarenessMonth we are highlighting newborn screening and the importance of early diagnoses to improve long-term health. 🧬 Newborn screening can detect cystic fibrosis before symptoms appear. Early diagnosis = better outcomes. 🔵 All 50 states screen newborns for cystic fibrosis 🔵 Early CF detection is associated with better health outcomes, improved nutritional status, a more rapid increase in lung function, and delayed chronic P aeruginosa infections 🔵 However, not all states screen for all CFTR mutations, which may leave behind people with less common mutations 🔵 The CFF recommends that all states screen for all CFTR variants, which you can read more about in the newly published Newborn Screening Guidelines #CysticFibrosis #CysticFibrosisAwareness #NewbornScreening (fb)
