Jim Thompson visits the Buffalo Naval Park each year on May 22 to lead a short Memorial Service to honor the crew of USS Scorpion SSN-589, which was declared lost with all hands aboard on this date in 1968. Jim is a local U.S. Navy veteran who served as a Sonarman from 1963-1967. He installed and tested equipment on a number of boats and submarines including the Scorpion. Men of the USS Scorpion SSN-589 written by Marie Burke (sister of Lt John P. Burke): Devotion to duty, you answered the call Love for your countrymen, martyrs all In the book of life inscribed in gold "Mission accomplished," the last message told Men of Dolphins, men of the sea Rest in peace eternally.
