University Neighborhood Housing Program, Inc.

Overview

The University Neighborhood Housing Program, Inc. (UNHP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating, preserving, and improving affordable housing in the Northwest Bronx, New York. Founded in 1983, UNHP was co-sponsored by Fordham University and the Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition (NWBCCC). The organization's mission encompasses three primary roles: it acts as a community-based affordable housing developer, a Bronx-focused researcher, and a direct-service provider through the Northwest Bronx Resource Center.

Mission and Impact

UNHP's mission is focused on benefiting low-income families and individuals, predominantly Black, Hispanic, and immigrant communities, in the Northwest Bronx. The organization achieves its goals by combining housing development, research, and community services. UNHP's research initiatives, including the Building Indicator Project (BIP), have a citywide impact on multifamily housing policy and practices.

UNHP also provides essential services such as financial counseling, assistance with the NYC Rent Freeze program, and free tax preparation for thousands of low-income families annually.

History

UNHP was established by Fordham University in 1983 to assist in community-based preservation efforts. In 1988, the Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition's Reinvestment Project joined forces with the university to reformulate UNHP. Jim Buckley, then head of the Reinvestment Project, became UNHP's Executive Director. Since its inception, UNHP has secured lines of credit from institutions to support affordable housing redevelopment, initially focusing on purchasing and renovating dilapidated buildings for community-controlled affordable housing.

Financial Overview

UNHP operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. Its financial operations include managing revenues from contributions, program services, investment income, and fundraising activities. As of recent fiscal reports, the organization's expenses often exceed its revenues, reflecting challenges in maintaining financial balance while pursuing its mission.

Leadership and Governance

UNHP is governed by a board of directors that includes representatives from Fordham University and other community organizations. Joseph Muriana, Roger Hayes, and Henry Schwalbenberg are part of the board leadership. James Buckley serves as the Executive Director of UNHP.

Initiatives and Partnerships

UNHP collaborates with banks, community groups, and public agencies to improve distressed multifamily buildings and combat predatory financial practices. The organization also partners with other community initiatives to host financial empowerment events, furthering its mission to build financial stability and housing security for Bronx residents.

Recognition and Impact

UNHP's impact extends beyond the Northwest Bronx, with its research and initiatives influencing affordable housing policies in New York City. The organization's commitment to preserving affordable housing and providing community resources reflects its dedication to maintaining the affordability and cultural integrity of the Bronx.
