Sister Thea Bowman Black Catholic Education Foundation
The Sister Thea Bowman Black Catholic Education Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing educational opportunities to under-served African American students. It operates with a focus on Catholic education as a pathway to overcome poverty and social barriers.
History
The foundation was established on October 19, 1989, at St. Michael's College in Burlington, Vermont. Sister Thea Bowman, an influential figure in African American Catholic communities, was present at its launch, along with several Catholic university presidents and bishops. The foundation was founded by Dr. Leonard and Mary Lou Jennings, who were influenced by Sister Thea's vision to support African American students nationally.
Mission and Activities
The foundation's mission is to facilitate access to Catholic higher education for African American students who may not otherwise have such opportunities. It provides scholarships to high school students transitioning to college, with the requirement that recipients maintain full-time enrollment at an accredited Catholic college or university. The scholarships cover tuition, room and board, and books.
In addition to financial support, the foundation offers enrichment programs where students engage with African American Catholic scholars to explore literature and theology relevant to their heritage. This approach aims to foster a deep appreciation for learning and spiritual growth among scholars.
Impact
Over the years, the foundation has achieved significant success, graduating more than 250 students with a high retention rate of 98%. Despite operating primarily as a grassroots organization with limited staffing, it has managed to sustain its efforts through community support and donations.
Leadership and Development
In March 2021, the foundation appointed Mr. Joseph T. Barker II as its Executive Director, marking a new phase of growth and institutional development. Barker's background in education and community leadership is expected to enhance the foundation's mission and outreach.
Sister Thea Bowman
The foundation is named after Sister Thea Bowman, a trailblazing figure in African American Catholic life. Born Bertha Bowman on December 29, 1937, in Yazoo City, Mississippi, she became a vocal advocate for cultural diversity and inclusion within the Catholic Church. Her legacy continues to inspire the foundation's work.
