The Erie Railroad’s massive locomotive known as the “Matt Shay” is pictured in Sayre while being serviced at the Sayre Shops of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. The picture was contained in a photograph album compiled by Mrs. Lester Bolander of Sayre. The locomotive was known as a “Triplex Compound.” It was the largest and most powerful locomotive in the world and spent three months at the Sayre Shops in 1919, according to the August 29, 1919 Sayre Evening Times.
