Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center

Overview

The Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center (CWWC) is a US nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a sanctuary for wolves, coyotes, and foxes. Established by founder Darlene Kobobel in 1993, the center initially focused on rescuing wolf-dogs but has since expanded its mission to include education about wildlife conservation.

Mission

The mission of the Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center is multifaceted:

  1. Education: To educate the public about the importance of wolves, coyotes, and foxes in the ecosystem and promote conservation efforts for forests, land, and water.
  2. Sanctuary: To provide natural habitats and care for animals that cannot live in the wild, primarily those raised by humans and unable to survive on their own.
  3. Conservation: The center participates in the Species Survival Program, offering a home to Mexican grey wolves and swift foxes with the potential for future reintroduction into the wild.

History

The CWWC began by rescuing wolf-dogs, realizing early on that many of these animals are not suited for domestic life. After the Hayman fire in 2002, the center relocated and expanded, focusing more on educational programs and less on pure rescue operations. By 2003, the new sanctuary was officially opened.

Operations

  • Animal Care: The center houses nineteen wolves, each with its own story, along with coyotes and foxes. Most animals were raised by humans and would not survive in the wild. They receive socialization, mental stimulation, and training.
  • Tours and Programs: Visitors can participate in guided walking tours, meet-and-greet encounters, full-moon tours, and VIP interactive experiences. These programs aim to educate the public about wild animals and their needs.
  • Habitats: The center provides three-acre "day spa" areas for some animals, complete with ponds and waterfalls. Enclosures are often expanded to allow animals more space to explore.

Education and Conservation Efforts

The CWWC emphasizes the importance of understanding the distinction between wild and domesticated animals. Educating the public on the challenges of caring for wolf-dogs, the center discourages people from keeping them as pets due to their destructive nature and inability to thrive in domestic environments.

The center also supports Species Survival Programs and works towards conserving natural habitats essential for various species' survival.
