In today's Des Moines Register it is mentioned that it was on this day in 1990 that Representative Neal Smith achieved his goal of funding for our wonderful refuge. So many people continue to enjoy the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge in Prairie City, Iowa. And the prairie reconstruction/restoration has brought back such a wide variety of wildlife. Here is what the Register wrote: "May 25, 1990: U.S. Rep. Smith wins approval of 3,000 acres for prairie preserve The Register reports that U.S. Rep. Neal Smith, D-Iowa, has won approval in the House for allocation of $6 million to acquire 3,000 acres near Prairie City in Jasper County where buffalo and elk will roam and prairie grass will wave in the wind. The idea, Smith said, is to allow the land to return to the appearance it had before settlers plowed under the prairie and decimated the native wildlife."
