In the evening of May 20 and in the early morning #OnThisDay May 21, 1864, both Union and Confederate forces pulled out of their Spotsylvania defenses and moved south and east toward the North Anna River, ending the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. While the battle was tactically inconclusive, both sides declared victory—the Confederacy because they were able to hold their defenses, and the Union because they inflicted severe losses on General Robert E. Lee's army. With a total of about 30,000 casualties, Spotsylvania was the costliest battle of the Overland Campaign. The carnage continued as the contest between General Ulysses S. Grant and Lee moved southeast to the North Anna River. (fb)
