Idaho Trails Association
The Idaho Trails Association (ITA) is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and maintaining Idaho's extensive trail system. Established in 2010, the organization focuses on ensuring that Idaho's hiking trails remain accessible for future generations.
Mission
ITA's mission is centered around maintaining open trails in Idaho, promoting the stewardship of recreational areas, and advocating for public lands. This is achieved through a collaborative effort involving volunteers, partner organizations, and government entities.
Activities
Trail Stewardship
ITA has a strong track record of trail maintenance, having completed over 450 trail projects since its inception. These efforts involve hundreds of volunteers who work under the guidance of experienced crew leaders to ensure trails remain accessible in both front and backcountry areas. In 2024 alone, 759 volunteers participated in 78 trail work projects.
Education and Awareness
ITA aims to educate the public about responsible trail use and adherence to Leave No Trace principles. This educational push helps preserve the natural beauty and integrity of Idaho's wilderness areas.
Advocacy and Protection
As a voice for Idaho's hiking community, ITA advocates for the conservation of trails and public lands. The organization works to keep these areas open and accessible for recreational use.
Programs
ITA offers various programs, including trail maintenance projects that cater to different groups, such as women, youth, and veterans. These projects provide opportunities for volunteers to contribute while exploring some of Idaho's most scenic landscapes.
Funding
ITA relies on donations and grants to support its operations. Recent funding has come from organizations such as the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust, Allen-Heath Memorial Foundation, and the Idaho Women's Charitable Foundation. These grants support specific programs and operational costs.
Governance and Leadership
The organization is led by a board of directors and staff members who share a deep passion for Idaho's outdoors. Melanie Vining serves as the Executive Director, bringing a wide range of experience in public lands management and community collaboration.
Revenues and Financials
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, ITA's financial activities are reported annually in its Form 990 submissions to the IRS. ITA's revenues primarily consist of grants and contributions from supporters.
Overall, Idaho Trails Association plays a critical role in protecting and maintaining Idaho's natural heritage through trail conservation and educational initiatives.
