May is Mental Health Awareness Month. We acknowledge the profound mental health impact that domestic and sexual violence has on survivors across all communities. The intersection of these experiences with mental health is significant, survivors often face increased risks of trauma, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and other mental health disorders as a result of the abuse. LGBTQ+ individuals are at higher risk for depression, anxiety, and substance use. BIPOC often face systemic barriers, including limited access to culturally competent care and a lack of therapists who share or understand their racial and cultural experiences. Many immigrant survivors who rely on visas fear that seeking mental health support could alert immigration authorities or lead to deportation. Many experience anxiety, depression, isolation, and a loss of identity. Some turn to substance use or self-harm to numb the pain. At DAWN, we see you. We understand the additional barriers Deaf survivors face, and we are here to support you. We offer services that are all accessible, inclusive, and survivor-centered, likesupport groups, art therapy, and counseling referrals. You are not alone. Healing is possible.
