✈Crossing the Skies: The Convergence of Military and Civil Aviation in the Southeast, 1900-WWI At the dawn of the 20th century, humanity’s interest in flight had evolved beyond mere fascination. Advances in aerodynamics were accelerating, and discoveries in the field promised to make powered flight a reality. The “lighter-than-air” balloons and airships of the 1700s and 1800s were giving way to the prospect of “heavier-than-air” machines, driven by engines. Throughout the late 19th century, aviators and inventors tested and refined a variety of monoplane and glider designs. While some details of early flight history remain debated, historians largely agree that Orville and Wilbur Wright achieved the first successful powered flight on December 17, 1903. Just four years later, in 1909, Georgia’s own Ben Epps and Zumpt Huff built and flew the state’s first airplane, marking a pivotal moment in the region’s aviation history. Over the following decade, as the United States edged closer to World War I, the Southeast would see the rapid expansion of the aviation industry, including the development of airfields, manufacturing plants, and military bases. The photographs and personal memorabilia displayed here highlight some of the key individuals and sites—both military and civilian—that played a crucial role in the region’s aviation evolution. Many of these items also underscore the significance of the Southeast’s contributions to the war effort, particularly in supporting the Allied victory during World War I. 🖼You can view this display on the 3rd floor of the Eagle building at the Museum of Aviation!
