Description

Providence Promise

Providence Promise is a U.S. nonprofit organization focused on supporting the college aspirations of students within the Providence Public School and Charter School systems. The organization is distinguished by its early intervention strategies, often beginning as early as birth, to facilitate equitable access to higher education for all families.

Mission and Vision

Providence Promise aims to promote high educational aspirations among Providence students by providing resources and support for college savings, family engagement, financial literacy, and reducing the financial barriers associated with higher education. Its overarching vision is to enhance K-12 and post-secondary success for Providence students, ultimately contributing to a more resilient community.

Programs

The organization adopts a multi-faceted approach to achieve its mission, which includes:

  • Fostering Relationships: Providence Promise builds trust with families by enrolling children from birth through the 9th grade in college savings programs, specifically utilizing 529 College Savings Accounts (CSAs). Families are encouraged to contribute about 1% of their annual income monthly to these accounts.

  • Investing in Education: The organization provides an initial $100 seed deposit to each enrolled family's CSA. Additionally, it offers an Early Scholarship Program, which incentivizes families and students with opportunities to earn extra contributions for participating in various activities, potentially earning up to $3,000 annually.

  • Empowering Families and Youth: Through robust family and youth engagement programs, Providence Promise empowers families to advocate for their children's educational success and equips students with necessary tools for post-secondary achievement. Programs are designed to be community-responsive and bilingual (English and Spanish).

Eligibility and Enrollment

Children from Providence can enroll in Providence Promise from birth. Formal eligibility extends to students within the Providence Public School and Charter School systems from kindergarten through the 9th grade.

Organizational Structure

Providence Promise is supported by a diverse team of full-time staff members, part-time staff, and volunteers, alongside a board of directors comprising community leaders and professionals committed to its mission.
