The New England Philharmonic, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering the composition and appreciation of contemporary classical music. Founded in 1976 as the Mystic Valley Chamber Orchestra, it later became known as the New England Philharmonic in 1987. The orchestra is based in Boston, Massachusetts, and is composed of volunteer musicians.

History

The New England Philharmonic was established by Michel Perrault and Gervásio de Chaves. Its first performances took place in November 1977 in Arlington and Belmont, Massachusetts. Over the years, the orchestra has evolved, taking residence at Framingham State College under Music Director Jeffrey Rink in 1986 and later at Simmons College from 1996 to 2014. Richard Pittman served as Music Director from 1997 until 2022, succeeded by Tianhui Ng.

Repertoire and Awards

The New England Philharmonic is renowned for premiering new works by contemporary composers alongside traditional classical music. It hosts a composer-in-residence program and an annual call for scores, which have led to numerous premieres and performances across the region. The orchestra has received the Award for Adventurous Programming from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) multiple times, most recently in 2011.

Mission

The mission of the New England Philharmonic is to promote contemporary classical music by performing commissions and recent works alongside traditional repertoire. The orchestra aims to engage and electrify audiences through innovative programming, hosting at least four public concerts annually. It also fosters young talent through its Young Artist Competition and community outreach programs.

Community Engagement

The New England Philharmonic is committed to making classical music accessible to diverse audiences. It participates in the Card to Culture program, offering free tickets to eligible participants. Additionally, the orchestra provides educational opportunities through its 'Meet the Instruments' programs for children and supports emerging composers through its Composer-in-Residence program.
