Aside from topping the NL with 87 stolen bases in 1896, Joe Kelley rarely led the league in any categories. But he was a well-rounded outfielder who could run, hit for average & get on base & annually ranked among the league leaders in various power-hitting categories as well. Kelley made his MLB debut at 19 with the Boston Beaneaters in 1891, but he was released after a brief big league trial.

Outfielder Joe Kelley’s sensational play on the diamond earned him the well-deserved title “Kingpin of the Orioles. ” He along with John McGraw, Willie Keeler, and Hughie Jennings made up the “Big Four” of the great Baltimore teams of the middle 1890s. Kelley was fleet of foot, sure-handed in the field, and blessed with a powerful throwing arm.
