Calais Hospital was originally incorporated as a for-profit organization in January 1917. It functioned under this status for 21 years before being purchased by a group of citizens and incorporated as a nonprofit hospital on October 19, 1938[2]. The hospital relocated to its current site on Franklin Street, with its name changing to Calais Community Hospital (CCH) in 1954 to reflect its expanded service area[2].

In the early 1960s, the hospital expanded its facilities by adding a 30-bed Extended Care Facility, which included new departments for physical and occupational therapy and pharmacy. Other departments, such as radiology, laboratory, and emergency services, were also enlarged during this period[2].

Modern Developments

After facing financial challenges, Calais Community Hospital filed for bankruptcy in September 2019. It was subsequently purchased by Down East Community Hospital and officially transitioned in June 2021[2]. Today, CCH operates as a 25-bed critical access hospital providing acute and swing bed care, with a 24-hour physician-staffed emergency department[2].
