Summit Rugby
Overview
Summit Rugby is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting rugby as a sport in Summit County, Colorado. Established in 1997, it supports the development of young athletes, fostering a community-oriented approach that emphasizes physical health, mental resilience, and values of inclusiveness and camaraderie.
History
The organization's journey began when students Mike David and Alison Aichinger approached Karl Barth to help initiate a rugby program at Summit High School. Initially operating under the Town of Silverthorne's Recreation Department, it quickly expanded, becoming a recognized Varsity Club in the Summit School District by 2006. Despite the lack of official recognition by the Colorado High School Athletic Association (CHSAA), the program thrived through donations, grants, and community fundraising efforts.
Evolution
In 2013, Summit Rugby was formally established as a nonprofit corporation, reflecting its growth from a grassroots initiative to a structured organization. The nonprofit focuses on youth development through sports, providing opportunities for both young men and women to engage in rugby. Karl Barth, a pivotal figure in the organization, has played a significant role in shaping women's rugby nationally by establishing the USA U19 girls team and coaching numerous athletes who have gone on to compete at the highest levels.
Achievements and Community Engagement
Summit Rugby has achieved notable success, with its high school teams winning multiple state championships. The organization's community engagement was highlighted in 2019 when it hosted the U.S. Women's National Rugby Team for a clinic, demonstrating its strong ties to the national rugby scene and its ability to attract top-level talent to its programs.
Financials
As of recent financial reports, Summit Rugby operates with a modest budget, relying heavily on contributions, fundraising, and program services for revenue. The organization maintains zero liabilities, indicating effective financial management.
Impact
Through its dedication to promoting rugby and fostering a supportive community, Summit Rugby continues to inspire new generations of athletes, contributing significantly to the growth of the sport in the United States.
