Burmese American Community Institute

The Burmese American Community Institute (BACI) is a non-profit organization established in 2011 to provide educational, vocational, and human services to the Burmese and immigrant communities in greater Indianapolis. As a 501(c)3 organization, its mission is to build a thriving, self-sufficient, and sustainable integrated community through advocacy, education, and employment.

History

BACI was formed in response to the growing needs of the Burmese refugee population in Central Indiana. Following years of consultations with community leaders and stakeholders, the organization was established to address the increasing demand for additional services. The institute's founding was driven by the conviction that investing in people and education is crucial for the community's success.

Services

BACI offers a wide range of services, including:

• Human Services: Providing essential support such as housing, health (behavioral and mental), transportation, and nutritional assistance.
• Employment Training and Job Placement: Helping individuals find employment and develop vocational skills.
• College Readiness and Youth Development: Offering programs like the Upward College Program to prepare high school students for college and future careers.
• Basic Needs Assistance: Ensuring access to fundamental necessities.
• Immigrant Services and Refugee Resettlement: Supporting refugees and immigrants with integration challenges.
• Citizenship and English Language Support: Facilitating language acquisition and citizenship processes.
• Research and Advocacy: Conducting research and advocating for the common good.

Impact

Since its inception, BACI has assisted over 25,000 individuals, not only from the Burmese community but also from other refugee and immigrant populations, such as those from Afghanistan, Ukraine, and Haiti. In 2023, BACI was recognized as a Private Sponsor Organization (PSO) with the Welcome Corps, and in FY2024, it became an officially approved Reception & Placement agency for refugee resettlement in Indianapolis.
