We’re sorry to share this sad case. But we wanted to commemorate the too-short life of this beautiful great horned owl. Named Amber, she lived a little over 24 hours after being brought to the clinic by the Urban Park Rangers (🙏🏽). She was found on the ground in Staten Island being menaced by a fox. She was rescued before being attacked, but her diminished state was evident on arrival — emaciated, anemic, dehydrated, weak heartbeat and some bleeding at the keel. The main suspect: anticoagulant rodenticide poisoning. ☠️ We provided oxygen, heat and fluids, plus vitamin K to counteract the effects of the rodenticide. She did rally a bit and was briefly able to stand, but she was never stable enough to receive additional medication or examination. She died the next day. Had the fox succeeded in killing and eating her, the cycle of poisoning would have continued. And this is fledging season for raptors all over the city, so hawks, falcons and owls are working twice as hard to hunt and feed their babies, and they’re more likely to go for a sick or dying rat or other animal. It’s the worst time to be filling those bait boxes with poison. Most people never see the damage these widespread, unregulated rodenticides cause to native wildlife, but we see it tragically often. Please consider every other option before using these products.
