Kaposia Inc
Overview
Kaposia Inc is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing customized employment and retirement services for individuals with disabilities. The name "Kaposia" originates from the Dakota word meaning "fleet of foot," which reflects the organization's motto "One Step Ahead."[1][3]
History
The foundation of Kaposia Inc began in 1963 when a group of parents established the Neighborhood House Day Activity Center at Salem Lutheran Church in West Saint Paul. This initiative aimed to help children with developmental disabilities acquire skills and integrate into the community. Over time, the organization expanded its services to include a preschool program in 1965 and incorporated as the Kaposia Area Day Activity Center in 1971.[3]
In the 1970s, Kaposia started offering work options for people with disabilities. The organization transitioned to customized employment in the 1980s, with a focus on competitive wages and integrated, open-market settings. By 1990, Kaposia had successfully moved all employment services to community-based settings.[3]
Services
- Customized Employment: Kaposia emphasizes individualized employment services, tailoring jobs to the strengths and interests of each person with disabilities. The organization ensures competitive wages and ongoing support, aligning with the concept of integrated work settings.
- Retirement Services: Introduced in 2000, these services support seniors with disabilities by offering opportunities for community participation, lifelong learning, and personal fulfillment through leisure and volunteer activities.[3]
Mission and Core Values
Kaposia's mission is to invest in the prosperity of people with disabilities and the profitability of its partners. The organization values the dignity and potential of each individual, striving for innovative and entrepreneurial approaches to empower those they serve.[3][5]
Financials and Impact
Kaposia's activities are primarily funded through program services, which account for a significant portion of its revenue. The organization has a strong track record in employment outcomes, with almost half of its customers finding meaningful employment within six months, and over 80% maintaining long-term positions.[4]
