Lake Bluff Open Lands Association
The Lake Bluff Open Lands Association (LBOLA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection, preservation, restoration, and management of open spaces and natural areas in and around the Village of Lake Bluff, Illinois. Established in 1981 by Carolyn Goetz, LBOLA's mission includes conserving diverse ecosystems such as wetlands, forests, ravines, beaches, bluffs, prairies, rivers, and savannas.
Founding and History
LBOLA was founded to save a small wetland and white pine plantation from development into a housing subdivision. Carolyn Goetz's initiative led to the eventual purchase of the property by the Lake Bluff Park District, which is now known as the Carolyn Goetz Wetlands Preserve. Over the years, LBOLA has been instrumental in various restoration projects, including the Skokie River Prairie, which was registered as an Illinois Land and Water Reserve in 2010.
Conservation Efforts
LBOLA engages in several conservation efforts, including:
- Restoration of Natural Areas: LBOLA has been involved in restoring numerous natural areas, such as the Skokie River Prairie, where native forbes and tall grasses were reintroduced after decades of dormancy.
- Removal of Invasive Species: Volunteers and paid interns use tools like chainsaws and loppers to remove invasive plants, enhancing biodiversity in local ecosystems.
- Community Engagement: LBOLA organizes regular workdays and educational activities to promote awareness and involvement in conservation practices.
Financial Status
As a nonprofit, LBOLA primarily relies on contributions for its operations. The organization has reported significant financial stability, with contributions constituting a major portion of its revenue. LBOLA also generates income from rental properties.
Governance and Structure
LBOLA is governed by a board of directors, consisting of community volunteers who oversee the organization's activities and ensure compliance with its mission. The organization is classified under the National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities (NTEE) as focused on environmental quality, protection, and beautification, as well as land resources conservation.
Impact and Recognition
LBOLA's efforts have contributed significantly to preserving natural habitats and promoting environmental stewardship in the Lake Bluff region. Its dedication to restoring prairies and other ecosystems helps counterbalance the loss of these habitats, which are crucially diminished in Illinois.
