Humboldt Crabs Baseball Inc

Humboldt Crabs Baseball Inc. is a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization based in Arcata, California. It operates the Humboldt Crabs, the oldest continuously operated collegiate summer baseball team in the United States, founded in 1945 by Lou Bonomini, later joined by Ned Barsuglia.

Purpose

The Humboldt Crabs Baseball Inc.'s mission is four-fold:

  • Promoting Family Entertainment: Providing high-quality summer collegiate baseball games at reasonable prices.
  • Supporting Collegiate Players: Offering talented collegiate-level baseball players a positive summer baseball experience.
  • Community Support: Contributing to youth sports programs, with an emphasis on baseball or softball, in the Humboldt County area through funding and equipment donations, as well as hosting annual baseball skills camps and clinics.
  • Preserving Tradition: Preserving and building the tradition of Humboldt Crabs Baseball.

Operations

The organization is managed by a volunteer Board of Directors, typically consisting of 12 to 15 members. The team plays most of its games at the Arcata Ball Park, which is rented from the City of Arcata from June to early August each year. The roster consists of NCAA-eligible collegiate players, primarily from the West Coast.

History

The Humboldt Crabs have won numerous championships, including multiple California State Semi-Pro championships and league titles in various summer baseball leagues. The team did not play in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but has otherwise maintained continuous operations since its inception.

Financial Structure

As of the latest available financial data, the organization's revenue primarily comes from program services and other revenue sources. Donations to this organization are not tax-deductible. Financial operations are overseen by the volunteer board, ensuring the continuation of the team's activities and community involvement.

Community Impact

The Humboldt Crabs contribute significantly to the local economy by attracting visitors and generating revenue for local businesses during the summer months. The team's presence also supports youth sports development in the area.
