When Girls Get Together, Inc.
When Girls Get Together, Inc. (WGGT) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2021 with a focus on empowering middle- and high-school-aged African-American females. The organization was established in response to research highlighting the vulnerabilities these young women face, including childhood trauma, sexual violence, sex trafficking, and limited access to mental health and social support.
Mission and Programs
The mission of WGGT is to provide supportive programs that foster academic, cultural, and financial literacy, thereby building confidence and competency among the girls it serves. The organization aims to empower participants for careers, college, and entrepreneurship.
Programs Offered:
-
The Arts: WGGT features a structured arts program that includes visual arts, music, and dance. This allows girls to express their creativity and develop social skills while achieving accomplishments.
-
Financial Literacy & Entrepreneurship: The program teaches girls how to manage money effectively, avoid debt, and build a foundation for future financial security. It also offers hands-on entrepreneurship experiences through product and service sales.
-
Mentoring: Women from diverse professional backgrounds, including corporate, academic, entrepreneurship, and nonprofit sectors, mentor the girls. This guidance helps them navigate the challenges faced by girls of color in America.
Events:
- Annual Daddy-Daughter Dance: This event reinforces the support system available to the girls, helping them build confidence to overcome obstacles.
Impact and Goals
WGGT's initiatives focus on creating strong, confident individuals prepared for success in their future endeavors. By addressing specific vulnerabilities through comprehensive support, the organization contributes to a safer and more equitable society for African-American girls.
