Kiwanis International
Overview
Kiwanis International is a global, volunteer-led nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the world by serving children and communities through various projects and programs. Its vision is to create environments where children are nurtured and supported to thrive.
History
Kiwanis International was founded in Detroit, Michigan, on January 21, 1915, initially as the Supreme Lodge Benevolent Order of Brothers. In 1916, it adopted the name Kiwanis, derived from a Native American phrase often translated to "we trade" or, according to some sources, "we build." The organization expanded internationally the same year with the establishment of a club in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Initially focused on business networking, Kiwanis shifted its emphasis to community service in 1919, particularly targeting the needs of children. By the 1960s, Kiwanis clubs were present in over 80 countries[1][3][5].
Mission and Values
- Mission: Kiwanis is dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time[2].
- Vision: To be a positive influence in communities worldwide, ensuring all children grow up in supportive environments[2].
- Motto: "Serving the Children of the World"[2].
- Objects:
- Prioritize human and spiritual values over material ones.
- Encourage living by the Golden Rule in all interactions.
- Promote higher social, business, and professional standards.
- Foster intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship.
- Provide means for enduring friendships and altruistic service.
- Cooperate in creating sound public opinion and high idealism[2].
Programs and Initiatives
Kiwanis operates several Service Leadership Programs for youth, including Key Club, Circle K, Builders Club, K-Kids, and Aktion Club, all sponsored by local Kiwanis clubs. It also partners with global organizations like UNICEF on initiatives such as The Eliminate Project, aimed at eradicating maternal and neonatal tetanus, and efforts to eliminate iodine deficiency disorders[1].
Community Impact
Kiwanis clubs engage in extensive community service, dedicating over 6 million volunteer hours annually and raising nearly $100 million for community projects, including building accessible playgrounds, food pantries, and hosting diversity fairs[1][3]. The organization empowers communities by identifying and addressing local needs.
Kiwanis is one of the largest service clubs globally, alongside Rotary International and Lions Clubs, collectively known as "the big three" in the service club sector[1]. Today, Kiwanis International is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, and operates in nearly 80 countries with more than 592,000 members[3].
