EASTERN Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Student Spotlight: Cameron Fleig May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and to celebrate, EASTERN is proud to highlight outstanding students of Asian heritage who are making a meaningful impact in their programs. Today’s spotlight shines on Cameron Fleig, a dedicated second-year student in EASTERN’s Welding Technology program and a senior at Hatboro-Horsham High School. Cameron takes great pride in his heritage and was excited to share his journey and experiences with us. Cameron’s heritage is rooted in Korea—his father was born in the U.S. after Cameron’s grandparents immigrated when his uncle was just nine years old. Cameron takes pride in his Korean background, especially when it comes to food. One of his favorite dishes is Mandu, a savory Korean dumpling filled with pork and vegetables and fried to perfection, lovingly made by his grandmother. Holiday gatherings are especially meaningful to Cameron, as they are filled with tradition, delicious food, and cherished time with his grandmother. In addition to his cultural pride, Cameron finds inspiration in Manny Pacquiao, the legendary Filipino boxer known for his determination, humility, and strength. To Cameron, Pacquiao is more than just a champion in the ring—he is a role model for resilience and greatness. When Cameron first visited EASTERN, he explored both the Cybersecurity and Welding programs—but it was Welding that immediately felt like the right fit. He was drawn to the hands-on nature of the work and quickly connected with Mrs. Cicchino, the Welding Technology Instructor, whose passion and teaching style sealed the deal. From that moment on, Cameron knew he had found his path. Cameron was drawn to the Welding Technology program by its strong earning potential and the opportunity to build a stable, hands-on career. Eager to expand his skills beyond the classroom, he is actively seeking a job in a welding shop where he can gain real-world experience and learn from seasoned professionals. His long-term goal is to join the Steamfitters or Boilermakers union, or to secure a full-time, entry-level position that offers growth, mentorship, and the chance to master his craft. Driven and focused, Cameron is ready to spark a future built on hard work, precision, and opportunity. “My dad is my biggest inspiration,” said Cameron. “The way he works—tirelessly and with such dedication—is truly amazing, and I try to model my own work ethic after his. He is the go-to tech expert for an entire school district in Camden, handling everything from elementary to high school. Watching him manage it all with skill and commitment motivates me to push myself every day.” “There’s serious earning potential in the trades,” said Cameron. “In fact, you can probably make more than many college graduates—and without the burden of student loan debt.
