North Valley Animal Disaster Group
The North Valley Animal Disaster Group (NVADG) is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting people during disasters by providing critical support for their animals. Founded in the late 1990s by John Maretti, a former firefighter, NVADG was established in response to devastating wildfires that highlighted the need for animal rescue services to ensure human safety during evacuations[2].
History
NVADG was formally created after tragic incidents in which people refused to evacuate without their pets, resulting in loss of life. The organization was supported by local emergency services, including CalFire, the Sheriff's office, Animal Control, and the Butte County Board of Supervisors. By 2002, NVADG had entered into a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Butte County Board of Supervisors, establishing its role in responding to emergencies beyond the capacity of Animal Control[2].
In its early years, NVADG operated without a permanent headquarters, relying on volunteers to store equipment and conduct operations. Over time, the group expanded its capabilities and resources, renting warehouse space and establishing more permanent animal shelters. This growth enabled NVADG to respond effectively to major disasters, such as the 2008 Humboldt and Butte Lightning fires and the 2018 Camp Fire, during which volunteers cared for over 10,000 animals[2].
Operations
NVADG volunteers are trained throughout the year in best practices for animal handling, feeding, first aid, disinfection procedures, and stress management for animals. The group collaborates with emergency services to educate the public about disaster preparedness, focusing on evacuation plans for families and their pets[4][5]. NVADG volunteers also participate in community events to raise awareness and provide guidance on preparedness.
The organization has grown to include over 350 active volunteers and partnerships with multiple Community Animal Response Teams for mutual aid. To manage its expanded operations, NVADG has appointed an Executive Director to oversee training, resources, and administrative tasks[2].
Mission and Impact
NVADG's mission is centered on ensuring that people are able to evacuate safely during disasters by providing critical support for their animals. This approach recognizes that the safety of humans is often closely tied to the well-being of their pets. By providing evacuation, sheltering, and rescue services, NVADG helps mitigate the emotional and practical challenges faced by individuals and families during disasters[3][5].
Governance and Recognition
NVADG is recognized as a nonprofit with the Employer Identification Number (EIN) 61-672191[3]. The organization operates with a board of directors and engages in community outreach and educational activities to foster preparedness and support animal welfare during emergencies.
Overall, the North Valley Animal Disaster Group plays a vital role in disaster response, bridging the gap between human and animal safety, and offering critical services to communities facing natural disasters.

Have a temporary place to go with your animals during a disaster that is safe for both you and your big dog. #2: Be prepared to take your pets medications, food, water, bows, bedding, leash, and collar so you pet has all her needs met while away from home.
