Boyertown Area Fire and Rescue Inc.
Overview

Boyertown Area Fire and Rescue Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, serves the communities of Boyertown Borough, Colebrookdale Township, and the northern half of Douglass Berks Township. The organization was formed following the consolidation of three legacy fire companies: Friendship Fire Company, Keystone Steam Fire Engine Company, and Liberty Fire Company. This consolidation took place in response to regional trends towards fire department mergers and consolidations in Berks County and Pennsylvania.

History

The consolidation process began in January 2013, with a committee formed to manage the merger. Advice was sought from the Pennsylvania Department of Economic Development and neighboring fire departments. After an 18-month planning phase, Boyertown Area Fire and Rescue officially began operations on July 1, 2014. Prior to the merger, the legacy companies faced challenges such as manpower shortages and financial issues. The consolidation aimed to improve services by combining resources, reducing unnecessary spending, and revitalizing the volunteer fire service.

Operations

Today, Boyertown Area Fire and Rescue operates out of two stations. Initially, the merger involved managing 22 pieces of apparatus from three separate stations. Following consolidation, the fleet was streamlined to include two engines, a rescue engine, an engine-tanker, a ladder truck, a heavy rescue, two brush units, and five auxiliary vehicles. The organization continues to refine its operations, with plans to further reduce its fleet size. The department is staffed by over 65 active members.

Social Quarters and Support

The social quarters of the original companies continue to operate independently, providing community spaces for events and activities. These quarters support the fire department financially and are important community resources.

Governance

The Board of Directors, composed of community members with business experience, oversees the financial and administrative aspects of the organization. This structure allows firefighters to focus on providing emergency services while administrative tasks are managed by the board.

Community Support

The success of Boyertown Area Fire and Rescue has been facilitated by strong support from local municipalities and community leaders. This collaborative approach enables the organization to maintain a cost-effective volunteer service, benefiting the community through reduced costs and enhanced safety.

Recent Activities

The department regularly responds to various emergencies, including vehicle crashes, structure fires, and mutual aid requests. They also participate in community events such as blood drives.

Financial Status

As a registered nonprofit, donations to Boyertown Area Fire and Rescue are tax-deductible, supporting the organization's mission to provide critical emergency services to the community.
