Memorial Day honors the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military, making the ultimate sacrifice for all of us. But let’s too, remember our military members who come back from combat, forever changed. It is estimated that between 37 and 50 percent of Afghanistan and Iraq War veterans have been diagnosed with a mental health disorder. These conditions are strongly associated with substance use disorders (SUDs), as are other problems experienced by returning military personnel. The onset of SUDs can also emerge secondary to other mental health problems associated with reentry to civilian life such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression.
