At EdBoost we aim to help as many children as possible enjoy learning, succeed academically, and attend the college of their choice. We believe that all children, regardless of their financial or educational backgrounds, deserve the opportunity to realize their academic potential. Although most Americans agree that education should be one of the government's highest priorities, we strongly suspect that current efforts to improve schools (and to give families more schooling options) will not be sufficient to help all children realize their academic potential. Why? Because schools can rarely give students the personalized attention they need to either remediate their academic weaknesses or maximize their academic strengths. Instead, classroom instruction is designed to provide children with access to a common curriculum, taught to all students in more or less the same way. Teachers, many of whom, in our experience, work hard and do their job well, rarely have sustained periods of time during the school day when they can work with a particular student or small group of students who don't understand a particular skill. Nor do teachers have time to expand on any one student's fascination with a particular subject area to push him or her to develop advanced skills. Because teachers are constrained to cover an extensive curriculum in a limited amount of time, they assign homework to provide students with the practice they need to master the skills they learned during the school day. When doing homework outside of school students must depend on their friends or their parents to help them if they forget or misuse a new skill. When it comes to enrichment, teachers tend to rely on parents to notice children's special interests and devise ways (special books, extracurricular classes) to develop them. Yet because of recent demographic shifts and policy changes, parents have less time than ever to help their children academically. Children whose parents have little money or little education are at an especially large disadvantage. Their parents tend to have less time and know-how to help them with homework and are also less able to afford remedial or enrichment services. These children are also less likely to have reference books, computers, high-speed internet access, and materials for science projects and other school assignments at home. That's where EdBoost comes in. EdBoost will provide high-quality supplemental educational services (from tutoring to help with building science projects to summer "book clubs")on a sliding scale that all families can afford.
