• Gospel for Teens: This program is a cornerstone of the foundation's efforts. It provides free, rigorous training in vocal technique, history of Gospel music, and performance skills to approximately 300 young people annually. The program is highly competitive, with about 75 teens selected each year from over 400 applicants. It not only enriches musical abilities but also fosters discipline, focus, and teamwork among participants, skills that are beneficial beyond music.

• Mama Music Program: This award-winning program focuses on teenage participation, enriching around 50 to 75 youths each semester. It offers a comprehensive exploration of music history and vocal technique, building self-confidence both on and off stage.

• Original African American Musical Theater: The foundation produces original musical theater productions aimed at centralizing and amplifying African American arts. These productions, such as "Mama, I Want to Sing!", have become iconic in the Harlem community and contribute to the foundation's legacy.

• Community Initiatives: Programs like Wednesday Sings and Alive + Kickin’ Senior Workshop provide diverse opportunities for community engagement through music. These initiatives ensure that music is accessible to all ages and backgrounds.

History

The MAMA FOUNDATION FOR THE ARTS INC was founded in 1998 by Vy Higginsen, building upon the success of the musical "Mama, I Want to Sing!", which ran for the longest period in American theater history. The foundation is headquartered in Harlem, a culturally significant location known for its rich musical heritage.
