Toni's Kitty Rescue

Overview

Toni's Kitty Rescue (TKR) is a non-profit organization founded by Toni Sestak in 2003. It is dedicated to rescuing and fostering orphaned kittens that are too young to be considered adoptable, with a strong presence in the San Francisco Bay Area.

History

Initially, Toni Sestak began her kitten rescue work by volunteering at the San Francisco SPCA. A visit to the San Francisco Animal Care and Control (SFACC) prompted her to shift her focus there, observing that underage kittens lacked adequate care and often did not survive. This realization led to the establishment of Toni's Kitty Rescue. For 23 years, TKR worked closely with SFACC to provide foster care for kittens. However, as of December 2022, TKR announced that it would no longer be working with SFACC due to changes in their operational needs.

Mission

The mission of Toni's Kitty Rescue is to provide life-saving care to orphaned kittens. This includes feeding, vaccination, and socialization until the kittens are at least 2 pounds and healthy enough to be considered for adoption. TKR has successfully cared for over 8,000 kittens since its inception, relying on a network of volunteers who foster these kittens in their homes.

Operations

Toni's Kitty Rescue operates through a community of volunteers who dedicate their time and resources to fostering kittens. Each year, TKR cares for approximately 800 to 1,000 kittens, with the help of over 85 volunteers. The organization also supports feral cat care, as seen in Toni Sestak's personal efforts to care for feral cats in her community.

Adoption Program

In recent years, Toni's Kitty Rescue has expanded its services to include direct adoptions of the kittens it fosters. Adopters are required to keep the kittens indoors at all times and are encouraged to adopt in pairs or to homes with another young cat. All adopted kittens are spayed or neutered, immunized, and micro-chipped prior to going to their new homes.

Impact

Toni's Kitty Rescue plays a significant role in addressing cat overpopulation by rescuing homeless kittens and placing them in loving, responsible homes. By doing so, the organization contributes to efforts aimed at reducing the euthanization of unwanted shelter cats.
