But now more than ever, Durham is in crisis. From gerrymandering to racist ‘right to work’ laws, corporations and politicians have diluted the voices of working people to fund tax cuts for the rich. We know solutions will come from right here in Durham. Duke is an anchor of our community, and we are calling on it to lead. We show up to work at Duke’s facilities across the city; we care for patients at Duke Hospital; we study and teach in Duke’s classrooms. Duke has continued to grow and profit, but working people in Durham aren’t able to keep up. Duke has a nearly $12 billion endowment. An endowment that big shouldn’t be sitting in a bank account, or used solely to accumulate more wealth. It should be used to address the roots of the crisis in the city that built Duke.
