Friends of Brandywine Springs
The Friends of Brandywine Springs (FOBS) is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization dedicated to the preservation, improvement, and historical restoration of Brandywine Springs Amusement Park, an early 20th-century amusement park located in Wilmington, Delaware. The organization focuses on commemorating the site's rich history while promoting nature and community engagement within Brandywine Springs Park.
History and Background
Brandywine Springs Amusement Park was operational primarily between 1886 and 1923. It featured a variety of attractions including the Scenic Railway (an early form of roller coaster), a Soda & Ice Cream Stand, a Pool Hall, a Ladies Pavilion, a Band Stand with its own band, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Pavilion near the entrance, and a bustling Boardwalk lined with amusements and concession stands.
Mission and Goals
The Friends of Brandywine Springs do not seek to rebuild the original amusement park but instead aim to create a historical nature walk within the current Brandywine Springs Park area. Their objectives include developing accessible trails, particularly a handicapped-accessible path along the old trolley line and the remnants of the boardwalk, constructing footbridges across Hyde Run to form a continuous walking path, and installing interpretive signage featuring historical photos and information about the old park structures where foundations remain visible.
Activities and Membership
FOBS holds monthly meetings at The Cedars United Methodist Church in Wilmington and invites community participation. Membership benefits include a quarterly newsletter, invitations to meetings, archaeological digs, and various social activities throughout the year. The organization also publishes materials reflecting newly uncovered personal recollections and historical research related to the amusement park's past.
Location and Management
Currently, Brandywine Springs Park is managed by the New Castle County Special Services Department. The Friends of Brandywine Springs work in cooperation with local authorities to ensure the park's historical and natural features are preserved and accessible to the public.
The Friends of Brandywine Springs serve as stewards of Delaware's local heritage, fostering community involvement in preserving the remnants and memories of a bygone era of recreation and leisure.
