Japanese American Memorial Pilgrimages

The guiding principle for our work is drawn from the art of Kintsugi. As a community, we have been fractured, pieces scattered across the US, but by collecting those pieces and remaking them into a cohesive community, we will become whole again.

Japanese American Memorial Pilgrimages Registration now open Mission statement from organizer Chizu Omori Why are we having a conference on Japanese American Incarceration. What motivates us to revisit this 80yearold history. For me it is the realization that it was far more devastating than generally thought. The camp experience fractured our community inflicted great pain on almost every inmate ruined many lives through policies like categorizing inmates into loyal and disloyal and wiped out the lifes work of our Issei generation.

#OTD in 1942, the #JeromeWarRelocationCenter opened in the swamps of southeastern #Arkansas. Located in the #MississippiDelta, Jerome held over 8,000 #JapaneseAmericans at its peak, making it Arkansas's sixth-largest "city" at the time. Families lived in tar-paper barracks in extreme conditions—sweltering summers, freezing winters, and constant mud from the swampland.
