BIPOC Intentional Community Council
The BIPOC Intentional Community Council is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) in creating and maintaining inclusive, intentional communities across the United States.
Mission
The Council's mission is to cultivate radically safe and inclusive communities by providing inspiration, solidarity, and support. This includes supporting individuals seeking to find or establish communities, as well as those already living in community settings[1][2].
History
The organization emerged amidst heightened discussions about racial justice and community inclusion in 2020. As part of this movement, the Foundation for Intentional Community (FIC) allocated a portion of its unrestricted donations to support BIPOC-led communities, with the Council overseeing the distribution of these funds[1]. Since its formation, the Council has expanded its role and gained 501(c)(3) status in 2023, establishing an independent Board of Directors to manage its operations[1].
Programs and Activities
- Granting Program: The Council has facilitated grants to BIPOC-led projects, supporting infrastructure development and other pressing needs identified by the communities. To date, the organization has distributed over $28,000 in funds[2].
- Monthly Support Calls: Regular meetings are held for Council members to share experiences and challenges, fostering a sense of community and solidarity among participants[2].
- Resource Directory and Workshops: The organization maintains a growing resource directory and offers access to workshops and training sessions. These platforms provide opportunities for learning and collaboration among BIPOC community members[2].
Membership and Support
Membership in the Council is open to Black, Indigenous, and people of color, while allies are encouraged to offer support in various capacities[2]. The organization accepts funding applications from BIPOC-led projects annually, aiming to address specific needs within these communities[1].
Impact
By focusing on radical inclusivity and safety, the BIPOC Intentional Community Council plays a pivotal role in promoting social equity and community resilience among marginalized groups. Its vision of supportive environments contributes to broader discussions about justice and community building in the United States.
