Dedicated in 1763, Touro Synagogue is considered to be one of the most architecturally distinguished buildings of 18th century America. Designed by Peter Harrison, one of America?s first and finest architects, it is a pristine and perfectly proportioned example of classical Georgian architecture. Of greatest importance is Touro Synagogues link to the precept of religious tolerance. The connection was indelibly forged in 1790 when President George Washington wrote his letter?To the Hebrew Congregation in Newport Rhode Island? and promised that the new nation would give ? to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance.? With those few words, he set the standard for religious freedom and civil liberties in America. In both its architectural and historical significance, Touro Synagogue stands as a symbol for the American values of democracy and freedom of conscience. Touro Synagogue is open to the general public. Each year, thousands of visitors, from all over the world, representing diverse backgrounds and faiths come to bask in its lovely atmosphere and hear its inspiring story. IMPORTANT UPDATE: Our June 1 post shared that our award-winning history presentations would not be given inside Touro Synagogue beginning this month. Touro Synagogue Foundation, in partnership with the National Park Service and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, has been offering public tours of America's oldest synagogue, including a visit inside the building, for generations, so this was a surprise and a big disappointment to all. We want to provide you with additional information at this time.

Touro Synagogue Foundation
All history presentations will be given in the Loeb Visitors Center or Patriots’ Park during June. There is no synagogue entry for the tour program. As there is no entry into the synagogue at this time, admission fees will be waived for the history presentation and access to two floors of interactive exhibits at Loeb Visitors Center.
