Nehemiah Project LA Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting former foster youth transitioning out of the foster care system. It provides a holistic approach to support, focusing on education, mentorship, and leadership development to help these individuals achieve self-sufficiency and economic mobility.

History

Founded by Bishop Ed Smith, Nehemiah Project LA Inc. was initially launched as a ministry outreach program under Zoe Christian Fellowship in Whittier, California, in 2017. Bishop Smith, with over 40 years of leadership experience in business and community development, brought his vision to life by leveraging his extensive community networks. The organization officially became a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2021 and has since been rapidly growing as a startup nonprofit.

Mission and Activities

The organization's mission is to provide a trauma-informed, holistic support system for former foster youth. It offers a safe and supportive permanent housing program for housing-insecure transitional age youth (TAYs) between the ages of 20 and 26. This program includes supportive services aimed at fostering self-sufficiency and economic mobility. In January 2022, Nehemiah Project LA opened its first permanent supportive house for females in this age group.

In addition to housing support, the organization connects former foster youth with essential resources such as food, transportation, and other support services. It operates through a collaborative network that provides support to other growing nonprofits serving transitional age youth.

Leadership

Bishop Ed Smith serves as the Founder and CEO of Nehemiah Project LA Inc. He was previously the founding Pastor and CEO of Zoe Christian Fellowship of Whittier and has held various roles in business and religious leadership.
