Hartly Volunteer Fire Company

The Hartly Volunteer Fire Company is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing fire, rescue, and emergency medical services to the community of Hartly, Delaware. Established in 1926, the company's history is deeply rooted in the town's efforts to combat a series of arson attacks that plagued the area.

History

In the early 1920s, Hartly faced numerous fires, including incidents at the Patriotic Order Sons of America building and multiple vehicle fires. This wave of arson attacks prompted the formation of a volunteer fire company to safeguard the community. Ludwig F. Schweitzer Sr. served as the first Fire Chief, while Roger A. Davis was the first President. Initially, the company operated from a small garage across from the Methodist Church, housing a 1926 Graham-Dodge Chemical Truck.

Over the years, the company has undergone significant expansions. In 1933, it moved to a larger building, and by the 1950s, it had introduced an ambulance service with a 1939 Pontiac ambulance. The current fire station, built in 1978, reflects the company's commitment to modernizing its infrastructure and services. The apparatus fleet includes engines, rescue units, a tanker, brush units, and ambulances, ensuring comprehensive emergency response capabilities.

Mission

The Hartly Volunteer Fire Company's mission is to provide professional fire, rescue, and emergency medical services to the citizens of Hartly and neighboring communities. This is achieved through diligent training, fire prevention, and education programs aimed at preserving life and property while promoting public safety.

Operations

The company operates in a large response area covering about 38 square miles, with a total first response area extending to around 180 square miles when including mutual aid districts. It responds to approximately 300 fire alarms and 900 emergency medical calls annually. The organization consists of over 100 personnel, including firefighters, line officers, and EMTs, supported by an administrative team managing firehouse upkeep and other duties.

Structure and Leadership

The company's leadership includes firefighting and EMS personnel, as well as administrative roles such as President, Vice President, Treasurer, and several directors responsible for aspects like finance and personnel management. The leadership structure is designed to ensure efficient operation and community engagement.

Impact on the Community

Beyond emergency services, the Hartly Volunteer Fire Company plays a significant role in community events and development. It maintains an active presence through public events and fundraisers, which enhance community support and engagement.

Recognition and Development

While Hartly is a small town, its fire company is recognized for its service to a broad area, collaborating with neighboring districts like Camden, Cheswold, Clayton, and Marydel. The company continues to evolve, updating equipment and training to meet modern emergency response demands.
