The application deadline for the 2026 Art/Sci Awarded Residency is extended to June 30, 2025! Art/Sci Awarded Residencies are funded opportunities open to the global community of scientists and artists whose work promotes dialogue and positive change in the environment and the world. Both established and emerging artists working in any media (visual, music/sound, literary, journalism, video, interdisciplinary, new media, other) may apply. We encourage all artists and scientists to apply, including (but not limited to) naturalists, biologists, musicians, designers, sustainability leaders, social practitioners, musicians, visual artists, writers and performing artists. Applicants must demonstrate how their work aligns with our mission and how they, or their project, will benefit from time on the land where PLAYA resides. Residents are awarded a residency in a cohort made up of 6-10 artists and scientists and may choose a 5-, 11-, 17- or 25-night session. All of PLAYA’s programs focus on expanding and deepening the field of art and science to empower the human motivation necessary for a healthy and whole future on this planet. We believe if human society is to maintain vibrancy of culture and biodiversity, it needs new ways of seeing the world. Do you enjoy the confluence of art and science? There are still spaces in our Taking a Closer Look: The Ecology of Summer Lake Through an Artist’s Lens Workshop, which runs June 25-30, 2025 in the Oregon Outback. During this 5-night workshop led by artist/scientist Jerri Bartholomew, we’ll use the tools of art and science to explore how water, and lack of water, shape the unique ecosystems of Summer Lake. In the field, we’ll map and examine the plants and soil from two ecosystems that feed the lake, as well as from the dry lake itself. In the studio, we’ll examine locally collected material using lenses and microscopes to see complexities you can’t see with your naked eye. Using drawing and gel printing, and/or a medium of your choice, you will explore how perception changes with scale and how data can be incorporated into and inform art. In this workshop we will not only explore Summer Lake, but the waters that are associated with it: the streams that flow from the Fremont-Winema Forest (Harvey Creek), and the ODFW wildlife refuge through which the Ana River flows. This workshop teaches how to view the ecosystem at different scales – from a landscape scale map of the lake and waters that feed it, to fine structures viewed under a microscope. This information will then be incorporated into the artwork to provide context and visual richness.
