Prevent Pet Suffocation Inc.
Overview
Prevent Pet Suffocation Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness about the suffocation risks that pets, particularly dogs, face from various types of food packaging, including chip bags and other plastic bags. The organization emphasizes education as a means to prevent accidental pet suffocation, which can occur rapidly and is often fatal.
Mission and Activities
The mission of Prevent Pet Suffocation Inc. is to educate the public on the dangers of pet suffocation associated with food packaging. Many common food bags, particularly those made from materials like mylar, pose significant risks. These bags can create a vacuum-like seal when a curious pet inserts their head, leading to suffocation.
The organization aims to:
-
Raise Awareness: Inform pet owners about the risks associated with food packaging, particularly chip and snack bags.
-
Provide Education: Offer resources and information on how to prevent suffocation incidents. This includes campaigns and educational materials that help owners understand how easily such accidents can happen.
-
Advocacy: Work towards public policy initiatives that could enhance pet safety regarding packaging materials.
Prevent Pet Suffocation Inc. reports that suffocation incidents can occur whether the pet owner is present or not, and the danger is not limited to specific breeds or sizes of dogs. The organization highlights the importance of being vigilant and proactive in protecting pets from these hazards.
Founder
Prevent Pet Suffocation Inc. was founded by Bonnie Harlan, who established the organization after experiencing a personal tragedy involving a pet. Her commitment to educating the public stems from the belief that increased awareness can save lives and prevent similar occurrences.
Impact
The organization aims to reduce the number of accidental pet deaths caused by suffocation from food packaging. By spreading awareness and educating pet owners, Prevent Pet Suffocation Inc. seeks to create a safer environment for pets and encourage responsible pet ownership practices.
As a tax-exempt charitable organization, donations to Prevent Pet Suffocation Inc. are tax-deductible, and funds are used to support its educational campaigns and outreach efforts.

It’s National Rescue Dog Day! This beautiful pup named Phoebe was happily rescued by a loving family. She was able to be given a new life instead of languishing in a shelter. National Rescue Dog Day was founded to bring awareness to the countless number of amazing dogs in shelters waiting to be adopted, to educate young children about animals, and to encourage spaying and neutering of pets. Rescue dogs often overcome extreme circumstances, and yet they often provide comfort, security, love, and friendship as devoted family pets. How can you get involved today? Here’s a list from nationalrescuedogday.com: 🐶 ADOPT: If there is room in your life for a dog, consider adoption and giving one a forever home. 🐶 FOSTER: Many dogs abandoned in shelters benefit from socialization or would just thrive better outside of a shelter environment. Others may be in need of some medical care or rehabilitation in a home setting before an adoption can take place. 🐶 DONATE: Shelters always need donations. In addition to financial donations, shelters have a list of much-needed items such as blankets, toys, treats, and leashes. 🐶 VOLUNTEER: Help out at your local shelter. Taking dogs for walks, grooming them, and giving them plenty of affection improves their socialization. 🐶 SPAY/NEUTER: Be responsible for your pets. Overpopulation is the number one reason shelters exist.
