Antibiotic-resistant genes have been detected in Georgia’s surface and wastewater, raising concerns about the future of medicine. 🦠 💊 UGA scientist Dr. Issmat Kassem and his team at the Center for Food Safety are working to understand how these genes spread—and what it means for human and animal health. Why is this important? Colistin, a last-resort antibiotic, is at risk of becoming ineffective, making infections harder (or impossible) to treat.
