Potomac Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects

The Potomac Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the field of landscape architecture in the Greater Washington, D.C. area, including northern Virginia and suburban Maryland. It is a local chapter of the national American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), operating to serve both professionals and students in the region.

Mission and Activities

The chapter's mission aligns with that of ASLA, focusing on leading, educating, and participating in the careful stewardship, wise planning, and artful design of cultural and natural environments. It advocates for sustainable design and advances the profession through education, communication, and fellowship. The chapter organizes events, meetings, and outings to foster community engagement and provides educational resources for local media and schools. Additionally, it acts as an advocacy body by interacting with municipal governments on issues impacting the profession and public spaces.

Membership and Governance

The Potomac Chapter represents approximately 400 landscape architects. The executive leadership includes positions such as President and Executive Director, with current leaders like Jules Krinsky serving as president. Past executive roles have been held by individuals such as Susan Newman and Christine Cotter.

Financial Overview

As a nonprofit organization registered as a 501(c)(6) entity, the chapter derives its revenue from a variety of sources. In recent fiscal years, these have included membership dues, program services, grants, contributions, and investment income. For example, in the fiscal year ending December 2023, total revenues were approximately $132,719, with significant contributions from membership dues and program services.

History and Purpose

Founded to serve and advocate for landscape architecture professionals and students in the region, the Potomac Chapter has become a central platform for fostering professional development, community service, and public education regarding the art and practice of landscape architecture. Its activities help raise awareness about the importance of sustainable design and effective land management in urban and natural environments.
