American Legion Auxiliary
The American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) is the largest patriotic women's service organization in the world, with nearly 1 million members. Chartered by Congress in 1920 and affiliated with The American Legion, it operates in nearly 10,000 American communities. The organization focuses on supporting veterans, young people, and community service.
History
The American Legion Auxiliary was established in 1919, shortly after the formation of The American Legion following World War I. The Auxiliary was created to involve family members of American Legionnaires in service activities, with the aim of supporting veterans and their families. By 1920, over 1,300 local units had been organized. The first National Convention of the Auxiliary took place in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1921.
Mission and Vision
The mission of the American Legion Auxiliary is to support The American Legion and honor the sacrifice of those who serve by enhancing the lives of veterans, military personnel, and their families. The organization's vision is to become the premier service organization in every community, fostering an environment of fellowship, patriotism, peace, and security.
Eligibility
Membership is open to spouses, mothers, fathers, daughters, sons, granddaughters, grandsons, and brothers and sisters of American war veterans. In 2019, eligibility was expanded to include male and female spouses of U.S. veterans, reflecting a broader definition of family relationships.
Programs
The American Legion Auxiliary operates a range of programs focused on Americanism, Children and Youth, Community Service, Education, ALA Girls Nation, Junior Activities, Legislative, National Security, Poppy, and Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation. These programs include providing scholarships to military children, advocating for veterans through legislative priorities, and promoting the poppy as a symbol of respect for veterans who have died in service.
Notable Contributions
The American Legion Auxiliary is known for its Poppy Program, which distributes red poppies to honor and raise funds for veterans. This program is one of the organization's most enduring and visible activities.
Structure and Operations
With operations in more than 9,500 communities across the United States and in several foreign countries, the Auxiliary maintains a strong presence nationwide. Members are engaged in various service activities, from teaching children about the U.S. flag to volunteering at VA medical centers. The organization's structure parallels that of The American Legion, with local units supporting a broader national framework.
Impact
The American Legion Auxiliary's impact extends beyond its immediate service activities, shaping a positive future for veterans and their families through advocacy, education, and community outreach. Its commitment to patriotism and responsible citizenship has made it a cornerstone of community service in the United States for nearly a century.
