California Society for Ecological Restoration SERCAL the California Society for Ecological Restoration is a nonprofit membershipbased organization dedicated to advancing the science art and practice of restoring native California habitats SERCAL Land Acknowledgement We recognize the ancestral lands of the over 109 Nations Tribes and Peoples that we now call California. Restoration work is only necessary because of the forced removal of the Native Americans by Spanish and American colonizers which created huge changes for the environment effects we still see today. Without the Native American Peoples actively taking care of the land colonizers destroyed native habitat interrupted ecosystem functions and brought invasive plants that took root and spread. People and the environment are inherently connected and our relationship with nature is an integral part of the ecosystem.
