‘You Stretched Diagonally Across It: Contemporary Tapestry’ is now on view at DC, and in celebration of their incredible work, we’re proud to spotlight each of the talented artists featured in this exhibition. Melissa Cody (@codyedgewater) is a Navajo textile artist from No Water Mesa, Arizona, known for her bold colors and the intricate three-dimensional patterns in her Germantown Revival style weavings. The now-celebrated weaving style known as “Germantown” derives its material from the synthetically dyed blankets the U.S. government rationed to the Navajo during their forced relocation to the Bosque Redondo reservation. Unwoven and rewoven from bright aniline yarns, the late-1800s textiles locate tradition in improvisation and reclamation. Weaving on an upright loom, Cody extends a legacy not of superficial reproduction but of active development of motif and technique, seamlessly incorporating digital technologies and patterns reminiscent of the pixelated video games of her own childhood with aspects of traditional Navajo weavings. ‘You Stretched Diagonally Across It: Contemporary Tapestry’ is curated by guest curator Su Wu (@imrevolting). ‘Masahiro LaMarsh: Anticlastic’ opens 21 June, 2025, and features custom-made grillz by LaMarsh (@hirolamarsh), a New York-based jeweler and artist. The exhibition, curated by Alexandra Hulsey (@l0lil), highlights the parallels between architectural forms and personal adornment in a body of work that is grounded in craftsmanship and archival references. Masahiro LaMarsh honed his sculptural techniques through immersive studies in marble carving in Carrara, Italy, and Iceland, where he also exhibited work at Whales of Iceland. He collaborates closely with private clients, including renowned musician Erykah Badu and celebrated artist Michèle Lamy, creating bespoke pieces that merge fine craftsmanship with personal narrative. Most recently, he furnished custom grills for the Grand National Tour featuring Kendrick Lamar and SZA, designed specifically for the tour’s dance team. LaMarsh’s personal work reflects his identity as a biracial, Asian American artist, drawing inspiration from the organic and architectural forms of his upbringing in Northern California and the Dallas–Fort Worth area. Embracing a wabi-sabi sensibility, he fuses traditional and contemporary materials in a practice that values imperfection, transience, and authenticity. Join us in celebrating the opening of ‘Anticlastic’ on Saturday, 21 June. RSVP your ticket now at the link in bio. Portrait of Masahiro LaMarsh. Courtesy of the artist. (fb)
