About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. –Acts 16:25 This summer we are focusing our Sunday sermons on the book of Acts. Thank Pastor Lose for that. Acts is a fascinating book about some of the followers of Jesus and their travels and proclamation of the Good News of Jesus Christ's life, death, and resurrection. Many of his followers went to any length to carry the message of Jesus’ love to the ends of the earth. One of my favorite stories in Acts is about Paul, Silas, and a Philippian jailer. Because Paul and Silas’ message of Christ’s love offended and threatened the religious leaders, Paul and Silas were stripped, severely flogged, and thrown into jail for their beliefs in Jesus. They were put in the innermost cell and their feet were in stocks – horrible circumstances to say the least. At about midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God and the other prisoners were listening to them. A violent earthquake opened the cell doors, and everyone’s chains were unfastened. Out of fear that the prisoners would escape, the jailer tried to end his life. With a compassionate and comforting word Paul said, “Don’t harm yourself – we’re all here. Believe in the Lord.” I love the fact that these followers of Christ, despite persecution and harassment, remained faithful and joyous. Hope to see you Sunday!
