Illinois Nutrient Research & Education Council
The Illinois Nutrient Research & Education Council is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting agricultural research and education in Illinois. It was established by state statute in 2012.
Mission and Activities
The council's primary mission is to optimize nutrient use efficiency, ensure soil fertility, and address environmental concerns related to fertilizer use. It achieves these goals by collaborating with certified crop advisors, crop production professionals, agricultural producers, and other stakeholders in the agriculture and agribusiness sectors. NREC provides financial support for research and educational programs designed to promote sustainable agricultural practices and enhance the adoption of efficient nutrient use methods.
Structure and Governance
NREC is governed by a 13-member council that annually solicits, reviews, and funds projects aligned with its mission. The organization is funded through a 75-cent per ton assessment on bulk fertilizer sold in Illinois.
Nonprofit Status
NREC is designated as a 501(c)(5) organization, categorized as a labor, agricultural, and horticultural organization. However, donations to the organization are not tax deductible, which distinguishes it from typical 501(c)(3) charitable organizations.
Activities and Impact
NREC plays a significant role in promoting sustainable agricultural practices by organizing and coordinating research and educational programs. These efforts focus on optimizing nutrient management, ensuring soil fertility, and addressing environmental concerns related to fertilizer usage. The council's activities are critical in enhancing agricultural productivity while protecting environmental health in Illinois.
In recent years, NREC has reported substantial revenue, with figures showing around $5.6 million in 2022. Despite this, the organization operates with a small team, emphasizing the efficient use of resources in achieving its objectives.
