Cave Canem Foundation, Inc.
Cave Canem Foundation, Inc. is a nonprofit organization founded in 1996 by poets Toi Derricotte and Cornelius Eady. Its mission is to cultivate the artistic and professional growth of Black poets by addressing their underrepresentation and isolation in literary curricula and programs across the United States.
History
Cave Canem was established to provide a platform for Black poets to develop their craft through workshops, retreats, and other literary programs. The organization's name is derived from the Latin phrase "Cave Canem," meaning "Beware of the Dog," which was inspired by a sign at the House of the Tragic Poet in Pompeii.
The first Cave Canem Retreat took place in 1996 at Mount St. Alphonsus Seminary in Esopus, New York, and later moved to the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg in Pennsylvania in 2003. This annual retreat offers a supportive environment where Black poets can hone their skills alongside renowned faculty.
Programs
- Cave Canem Retreat: A week-long gathering for selected Black poets to engage in poetry workshops, readings, and discussions.
- Legacy Series: Established in 2001, these programs honor influential elder Black poets and explore the historical, aesthetic, and personal influences on their work.
- Poets on Craft Series: Launched in 2008, featuring award-winning poets discussing aesthetics and the role of contemporary poets.
- Regional Workshops: Semi-annual workshops for emerging poets of color held in New York City and other locations.
- First and Second Book Prizes: Providing recognition and publication opportunities for emerging Black poets.
- Anthology Publications: Cave Canem has published several anthologies, including Gathering Ground and The Ringing Ear, to promote African American poetry.
Impact and Recognition
Cave Canem has been instrumental in shaping modern African American literature. It has supported over 500 poets, many of whom have gone on to win prestigious literary awards, such as the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. In 2016, the organization received the National Book Foundation's Literarian Award, recognizing its significant contribution to the American literary community.
Leadership and Governance
Cave Canem is led by a diverse board of directors, including poet and educator Tyehimba Jess. The organization prioritizes equity and inclusion, ensuring that its programs and leadership reflect its commitment to race equity and community representation.
