#OnThisDay May 21, 1866, flames engulfed the Academy of Music on East 14th Street and Irving Place in Manhattan. Built in 1854 as NYC's premier opera house, this cultural landmark hosted world-class performances for the city's elite before the Metropolitan Opera existed. The magnificent building featured ornate Italian Renaissance architecture and could seat 4,000 patrons. Despite the devastating fire, the Academy was rebuilt and continued to serve as a cultural hub until its final demolition in 1926.
