Earth & Space Research
Overview
Earth & Space Research (ESR) is a nonprofit research institute based in the United States. It is dedicated to advancing scientific understanding of the Earth system through research and public education.
Mission
The organization's mission is to increase societal understanding of the Earth system by conducting scientific research and engaging in public education. ESR focuses on oceanographic research, spanning topics from polar to equatorial oceanography.
Activities
ESR's activities include conducting research funded by federal governmental agencies such as NASA, NSF, ONR, and NOAA. Additionally, it engages in outreach and education efforts, including K-12 activities designed to introduce students to oceanography and Earth sciences through hands-on learning experiences.
Governance
The organization is governed by a Board of Directors, which includes notable figures such as Dr. Laurence Padman and Gary S.E. Lagerloef. The board conducts formal self-assessments and ensures a diverse recruitment process.
Funding
ESR is primarily funded by government agencies. However, it also accepts contributions, which are tax-deductible under U.S. law. These contributions support activities not covered by government grants, including public outreach and innovative research projects.
Operations
ESR operates with a focus on employee flexibility and competitive benefits. It seeks to expand its scientific team by attracting researchers with existing or potential funding sources, allowing scientists significant autonomy over their projects.

We had another great evening teaching kids about density and the oceans at Edmond Heights K-12 STEAM fair last night. For this event, ESR's Susan Howard and Jesse Anderson were joined by University of Maryland glaciologist and ESR Affiliate Taryn Black to present our hands-on exhibit. We had a lot of fun engaging with the students and their parents! (fb)

ESR scientists were thrilled to spend Earth Day teaching students and parents about the importance of the oceans at the Sky Valley Education Center's Earth Day event on April 22. Susan Howard and Jesse Anderson explained the concept of density, how density differences drive ocean circulation, and discussed our work as physical oceanographers. It was a great day filled with a lot of hands-on learning. We are looking forward to our next event which is next week at Edmond Heights K-12 STEAM fair! (fb)
